TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Taiwan People's Party (TPP) Presidential hopeful Ko Wen-je received enthusiastic cheers from the young crowd at Sunday's Taipei housing justice and judicial reform rally.
Under the scorching sun, Ko took the stage and questioned the ruling Democratic Progressive Party's (DPP) pledge to provide affordable social housing for young adults.
"During President Tsai's tenure, how many social housing units were initiated for construction?" Ko asked. "Secondly, how many have been successfully completed?"
The former Taipei City mayor also advocated for judicial reform, firmly opposing parole being granted without proper due process.
"It is crucial to raise the parole standards for severe offenses while ensuring openness and transparency in the selection of inmates authorized to work outside correctional facilities," Ko said.
Meanwhile, Foxconn Founder Terry Gou also addressed the stage in support of the rally, receiving comparatively lukewarm responses compared to Ko.
Nevertheless, his reception was not as hostile as that towards Kuomintang (KMT) presidential candidate Hou You-yi, who faced "booing" throughout his speech.
Although Hou's statements echoed Ko's criticism of the DPP's performance, he failed to secure the support of those in attendance, highlighting a stark contrast between the two candidates.
The DPP leadership convened at the Yuanshan Grand Hotel Taipei for their party congress, with incumbent President Tsai Ing-wen, DPP's 2024 presidential nominee Lai Ching-te, and Premier Chen Chien-jen in attendance.
Many at the rally criticized the DPP for holding a closed-door meeting in an air-conditioned building. At the same time, the people gathered outside under the scorching sun to protest against the party's unfulfilled promises.
