NEW TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Former British Prime Minister Liz Truss emphasized her backing for Taiwan on Wednesday (May 17), asserting that the country stands at the forefront of the global struggle for freedom.
Countries ranging from South Korea to Germany have recently voiced their opposition to China's threats against Taiwan, highlighting an escalating war of rhetoric that teeters on the brink of a full-blown conflict.
This trend has been exacerbated by recent Chinese military drills surrounding Taiwan and the strengthening of alliances in Asia by the United States aimed at countering Beijing's heightened military presence.
Speaking at a forum organized by the Prospect Foundation, Truss stated, "I believe that the biggest danger to the future of Taiwan is fatalism, not on your part, but a fatalism in the free world that somehow a Chinese takeover of Taiwan is inevitable."
"It is vital that such a notion should not be aided and abetted by any of us living in free democracies," she added.
Truss called for increased Western support for Taiwan and cautioned against China's economic and political threats to the Western world.
As a current member of the House of Commons, Truss joins a growing list of elected representatives and former officials from the United States, European Union nations, and other countries who have visited Taiwan to demonstrate their defiance of China's threats and attempts to isolate the island and its advanced technology-driven economy from the international community.
