TAIPEI (TVBS News) — President Tsai Ing-wen attended the Taipei Veterans General Hospital Heavy Ion Therapy Center opening ceremony on Monday (May 15), marking a new milestone in Taiwan-Japan medical cooperation.
"The completion of the Heavy Ion Therapy Center marks the final puzzle piece for radiation therapy in Taiwan,” President Tsai said.
"Our goal is clear — to leverage the capabilities of major medical centers and dedicate ourselves to developing better innovative medical technologies, providing the best possible care for patients in Taiwan, and enhancing Taiwan's competitiveness in the global healthcare industry," she added.
Tsai announced that in the future, 2% of treatments at the center will be offered free of charge to underprivileged patients, showcasing Taiwan's commitment to healthcare equality.
Additionally, she warmly welcomed patients in need of treatment from around the world, affirming the country's position as a global leader in medical expertise.
The Taipei Veterans General Hospital Heavy Ion Therapy Center is not only the 14th Heavy Ion Therapy center in the world but also the fastest-completed heavy ion facility exported by Japan overseas. This achievement highlights the strong bond between Taiwan and Japan in medical cooperation.
Wei-Ming Chen, the superintendent of Taipei Veterans General Hospital, expressed his gratitude for the support from the government and various corporations, which made completing this center possible.
Heavy ion therapy is a non-invasive and painless treatment that explicitly targets cancerous tissue while minimizing damage to normal cells. It provides a new treatment option for patients with radiation-resistant cancers such as pancreatic and liver cancer, offering hope for healing.
