NEW TAIPEI (TVBS News) — New Taipei Mayor Hou You-yi faced tough questions at a City Council session regarding the controversial 'One Country, Two Systems' framework on Tuesday (May 9).

The Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) members grilled Mayor Hou on cross-strait issues, including the reference to 'One China.' When asked, Mayor Hou firmly responded that it refers to the Republic of China.

However, the DPP council members argued that the 1992 consensus, which Mayor Hou supports, is essentially the same as "One Country, Two Systems."

Mayor Hou emphasized the importance of avoiding confrontation and conflict, stating that our country is called the Republic of China and that we should not use ideology to divide us.

"Our country is called the Republic of China. […] Let us avoid using ideology to create unnecessary confrontation and conflict," Hou told reporters.
