TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Taiwan's Vice President and Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) Chairman, Lai Ching-te, took a significant step toward running for the 2024 presidential election on Wednesday by registering as a candidate for the DPP.

While Lai is widely considered the leading contender for the DPP nomination, a primary election will be held if multiple candidates register for the coveted slot within the party.

Speaking at a press conference, Lai emphasized the need for unity in the face of China's increasing diplomatic pressures and ongoing hostility towards Taiwan.

His remarks were likely prompted by the recent announcement from Honduran President Xiomara Castro, who has requested officials to seek official relations with China.

This move will likely lead to severing diplomatic ties with Taiwan as China does not allow countries with which it has diplomatic relations to maintain official ties with Taiwan.

Lai's bid for the presidency comes at a critical time for Taiwan, as it continues to navigate increasingly tense relations with China.

His candidacy and emphasis on unity signal a desire to project a strong and united front in the face of these challenges.
