TAIPEI (UK Sky/ENEX) — Foreign Minister Joesph Wu said on Wednesday that he believes China is now "more likely" to invade Taiwan to distract from President Xi Jinping's domestic problems.
Speaking exclusively to Sky News in his first sit-down interview of the year, Joseph Wu set 2027 as the key date such action will most likely happen.
"To me, 2027 is the year that we need to watch out," Wu said. "In 2027, Xi Jinping is likely to go into his 4th term. If you look at the Chinese situation right now, the economy is going down, (and) people are not happy."
"So we are concerned that in 2027 if Xi Jin-ping cannot change the situation domestically in China, he might want to resort to a use of force, or creating a crisis externally to divert domestic attention," he added.
"Or to show to the Chinese that he has accomplished something," he continued.
