TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Millions of tons of discarded plastic enter the sea every year, which is estimated to be heavier than the total weight of fish in 2050.

Every year, 4.8 million to 12.7 million tons of plastic go into the ocean. At this rate, the plastic waste in the ocean will be heavier than the total amount of fish by 2050, according to environmental groups.

Activists hope Taiwanese people can use less plastic and create less waste, which is more helpful than bleach cleaning.

Most people think of straws, plastic bottles, and plastic bags when they hear about ocean pollution or waste, activists said.

However, according to studies, 75 to 86 percent of plastic waste comes from fishing activities. Almost half of the waste is fishing nets and ropes, they added.

According to tallies, 92 percent of the waste is larger objects, and 8 percent are small particles easily eaten by ocean creatures and then enter the food chain again, they warned.
