NEW TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Taiwan merchants are selling snap traps online to evade local police, according to an animal protection group.
The Animal Protection Act in Taiwan prohibits people from manufacturing, selling, and using snap traps. Anyone caught violating the regulations can be fined up to NT$75,000.
New Taipei City also prohibits the usage of snap traps, but local police officers said they cannot fine merchants from other municipalities.
Despite the high fine, more and more merchants are turning to online platforms, even Facebook, to sell these illegal devices. When the transaction is online, it is almost impossible for the police to track down the manufacturers, activists said.
Yet, New Taipei City Animal Protection Director Yang Shu-fang vowed on Sunday (Dec. 5) that her administration will trace the source through the deliveries.
