Tigerair Taiwan (台灣虎航, 6757) has launched a subscription plan starting at NT$1,588 (US$50) per month for four round-trip tickets annually. Why is the budget carrier introducing subscriptions, and is it actually a better deal?

TAIPEI (Global Views Monthly/TVBS News) — The carrier announced Taiwan's first airline subscription service, "Team Tiger," with sales launching in early April. Three tiers are available, each offering different benefits and pricing structures.

The entry-level "TEAM Lite" plan costs NT$1,588 (US$50) monthly for four round-trip tickets annually. This means travelers pay approximately NT$4,764 (US$151) per quarter for tickets valued at NT$8,000 (US$253). This tier is available only in limited quantities for a limited time.

The mid-tier "TEAM Plus" plan requires a NT$5,299 (US$168) subscription fee plus NT$1,888 (US$60) monthly. It offers six round-trip tickets annually with priority boarding and check-in privileges. The top-tier "TEAM Max" plan provides 12 round-trip tickets annually with priority boarding, check-in, priority baggage handling, and exclusive lounge access. It costs NT$3,588 (US$114) monthly plus a NT$7,799 (US$247) subscription fee.

Tigerair said the subscription mechanism aims to reward long-term tigerclub members while enhancing brand loyalty and customer retention through competitive fares and premium experiences, ultimately building an exclusive travel ecosystem for the airline. The carrier operates flights to Japan, South Korea, Thailand and Vietnam, and serves more destinations in Japan and South Korea than any other Taiwanese airline.

How does this subscription model differ from traditional mileage rewards programs? Huang Tai-lin (黃泰林), a professor of shipping and transportation management at Chang Jung Christian University (長榮大學), told Global Views Monthly (遠見雜誌) that traditional frequent flyer programs (FFPs) operate as "post-reward" systems — passengers must complete flights and accumulate miles before redeeming benefits. Tigerair's subscription, by contrast, is a "pre-payment" model targeting high-frequency, price-sensitive travelers through fixed monthly fees.

From a global aviation perspective, airline subscription models have precedents, with carriers in the United States and Europe offering similar programs. Alaska Airlines' Flight Pass uses a prepaid model with fixed regions and routes, targeting U.S. West Coast travelers. Europe's Wizz Air operates a model closer to an annual fee-based discount membership.

Huang analyzed that Tigerair's extensive Japan network leverages Taiwanese travelers' strong affinity for Japan and the short flight distances involved. The core strategic goals are "expanding the market" and "creating buzz," he said. For airlines, prepaid subscription fees provide modest support for cash flow. More importantly, by setting the rules of the game, passengers are incentivized to exclude competitors when booking, achieving a deep customer lock-in effect.

However, this non-traditional ticketing model will test airline revenue management capabilities. Huang noted that many airlines have begun implementing AI-driven revenue management systems to dynamically adjust ticket prices and maximize revenue per aircraft. When subscription members occupy seats first, a scarcity effect — "the rarer, the more valuable" — drives up prices for non-subscribers. Balancing the benefits promised to prepaid members against high-margin revenue from individual travelers will be a significant challenge, he said. ◼ (At time of reporting, US$1 equals approximately NT$31.54)
