TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Thunderstorms and cooler temperatures will hit northern, central and eastern Taiwan on Friday (May 8) as a front passes and the northeast monsoon strengthens, the Central Weather Administration (CWA, 中央氣象署) said Thursday (May 7). Temperatures in northern Taiwan may drop to around 20°C (68°F) over the weekend.
Temperatures in northern Taiwan, Yilan and Hualien will range from 23°C to 27°C (73°F to 81°F) on Saturday, with lows dipping to 20°C (68°F). Cool, damp conditions will persist until moisture decreases Sunday, allowing temperatures to rise. The northeast monsoon will bring unstable weather, with highs between 23°C to 26°C (73°F to 79°F) and lows from 19°C to 21°C (66°F to 70°F).
The northeast monsoon will weaken on Sunday, which is Mother's Day, reducing rainfall in northern Taiwan, though brief showers may still occur in the east. Central and southern regions will see more stable and warmer weather. From Friday to Sunday, the north and east face increased chances of localized showers or thunderstorms, with some areas expecting heavier rainfall.
A shift to southeasterly winds will raise temperatures in western Taiwan to 31°C to 33°C (88°F to 91°F) on Monday. Eastern areas and the Hengchun Peninsula (恆春半島) may still see isolated showers. Moisture levels will increase slightly by Wednesday, potentially leading to scattered rain in the north. Typhoon Hagupit, the fifth typhoon of the season, formed over the eastern Philippine Sea but is expected to weaken and dissipate without affecting Taiwan, the CWA said. ◼
