TAIPEI (TVBS News) — The New Taipei City Department of Environmental Protection (新北市政府環保局) announced on Wednesday (Jan. 14) a temporary suspension of garbage collection during the Lunar New Year holiday, spanning from 6 p.m. on Feb. 16 to Feb. 19. To accommodate residents' needs, the department will establish 70 designated collection points citywide.
Officials will work overtime on Feb. 15 to manage waste collection, while services will conclude early at 6 p.m. on Feb. 16, with a complete halt from Feb. 17 to Feb. 19. Normal operations will resume on Feb. 20. Residents can access information regarding the locations and operating hours of these collection points through the New Taipei City Waste Collection Information website.
The department emphasized the necessity of using designated garbage bags at these collection stations. Mobile surveillance equipment and patrol personnel will monitor the sites, and those caught disposing of waste outside designated hours may face fines up to NT$6,000. The department urged residents to sort waste into general garbage, kitchen waste, and recyclables.
They also advised that hazardous items, such as high-pressure spray cans and gas canisters, should be emptied before recycling. Power banks must be recycled separately, while powdered items like milk and flour should be mixed with water and disposed of as kitchen waste. The department reminded residents to ensure that joss paper, incense ashes, and firecracker remnants are fully extinguished and soaked in water before disposal.
