TAIPEI (TVBS News) — The Central Weather Administration (氣象署) issued a wind advisory on Wednesday (Dec. 17), warning of strong winds sweeping across Taiwan through Thursday evening. The agency urged residents to prepare for gusty conditions that could pose safety risks in several regions. Multiple counties and cities face potential hazards from sustained winds and powerful gusts over the next 30 hours.
The advisory places counties and cities under a yellow alert, including New Taipei City, Taoyuan City, Hsinchu City, and Taichung City, among others. These areas may experience sustained winds exceeding Beaufort level 6 (39-49 km/h) or gusts surpassing level 8 (62-74 km/h), prompting officials to caution residents about potential hazards. Residents in affected areas should secure loose outdoor items and exercise caution when traveling.
Northeast winds will bring cooler weather to areas north of Taoyuan and Yilan on Thursday (Dec. 18), according to the Central Weather Administration. The rest of Taiwan will also experience cooler mornings and evenings, with significant temperature fluctuations between day and night south of Hsinchu. The temperature swings require residents to dress in layers and monitor weather conditions carefully throughout the day for their safety.
Keelung's northern coast, the Yilan region, and Greater Taipei's mountainous areas may see brief showers on Thursday, with possible heavy rainfall in localized areas. The forecast predicts sporadic rain north of Taoyuan and in Hualien, Taitung, and the Hengchun Peninsula (恆春半島), Taiwan's southernmost tip. Regions south of Hsinchu can expect mostly cloudy to clear skies throughout the day.
