TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Taiwan's stock market closed lower Tuesday (Dec. 9), dropping 121.18 points to 28,182.60 amid concerns over upcoming U.S. Federal Reserve decisions. The index fell 0.43% with trading volume reaching NT$509.27 billion (around US$16.4 billion) as investor sentiment weakened. The market opened high but reversed course throughout the trading session.
Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC, 台積電) shares fell NT$15 (around US$0.48) to close at NT$1,480 (around US$47.59), their lowest point of the day. Foxconn (鴻海) rose NT$3 (around US$0.10) to end at NT$235 (around US$7.56). Quanta Computer (廣達) dropped NT$1.5 to NT$296 while MediaTek (聯發科) fell NT$20 to NT$1,420.
Sector performance varied, with the electronics subindex decreasing 0.54% and the financial subindex increasing 0.53%. The over-the-counter index rose 0.69%. CPO concept stocks showed strength, with Browave (波若威) closing at the limit-up price of NT$359.5 (around US$11.56). WinWay (穎崴), Luxnet (華星光), and Shunsin (訊芯-KY) recorded gains of 6.15%, 4.67%, and 4.38%, respectively.
Memory chip stocks performed well, with Winbond (華邦電), Etron Technology (鈺創), and CAEC (長園科) rising 5.01%, 4.9%, and 4.46%, respectively. Chang Yu-ming (張祐銘), chairman of Myson Century (世紀民生科技) and Feei Cherng Develop Technology (斐成開發), announced Monday (Dec. 8) the acquisition of Ever-Clear (萬年清) for NT$33.525 (around US$1.08) per share. The acquisition marks a significant consolidation move in Taiwan's technology sector. ◼
