TAIPEI (TVBS News) — São Paulo's Museu da Imagem e do Som (MIS), a major Brazilian cultural institution, will screen classic Taiwanese films KANO and Cape No. 7 (海角七號) Dec. 6-7. The museum invited Hsieh Ju-hsin (謝如欣), president of the Associação Taiwan-Brasil de Intercâmbio Cultural e Artístico (台巴藝術文化交流協會), a Taiwan-Brazil cultural exchange association, to curate the showcase introducing Taiwanese culture to Brazilian audiences.
The festival will screen KANO, celebrating Taiwan's baseball triumph in the international tournament WBSC Premier12, and Cape No. 7, known for its music, love, and local themes. The museum developed interest in Taiwanese cinema following last year's successful charity screening of director Wei Te-sheng's (魏德聖) films, which drew large audiences and positive reviews. Hsieh said the festival will allow Brazilian audiences to experience the richness and diversity of Taiwanese storytelling traditions.
The film festival aligns with the museum's exhibition "A alma humana, você e o universo de Jung" (The human soul, you, and the universe) by Jung, exploring the collective unconscious and psychological archetypes. This thematic connection offers deeper understanding of Taiwanese cultural and spiritual elements through cinema, providing Brazilian audiences a unique opportunity to explore cross-cultural psychological themes. The pairing demonstrates how Taiwanese films reflect universal human experiences and emotions.
KANO will screen Dec. 6 alongside the Iranian film The Siren and the French-Japanese documentary Les Sorcières de l'Orient, creating an international cinema showcase. Cape No. 7 will be shown Dec. 7 with the Moroccan-Tunisian documentary Ziyara and the Vietnamese-French film Les Confins du Monde, continuing the weekend's global film celebration. The diverse programming reflects the museum's commitment to showcasing world cinema alongside Taiwanese cultural contributions. ◼
