TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Major Taiwan supermarkets are failing to meet cage-free egg commitments, the Environment & Animal Society of Taiwan (台灣動物社會研究會) revealed Thursday (Nov. 20). The advocacy group released findings linking caged systems to food safety concerns after fipronil residue was detected in eggs from a Changhua farm.
Deputy Executive Director Chen Yu-min (陳玉敏) warned that over 70% of Taiwan's 8 billion annual egg consumption comes from caged systems. Chen emphasized that global retailers have committed to cage-free eggs by 2025, following the European Union's 2012 ban on caged production.
The report ranks Carrefour (家樂福) highest among retailers, with its premium Mia C'bon stores reaching 100% cage-free eggs while standard outlets achieve 50%. PX Mart (全聯) performed worst with just 7.14% cage-free offerings after acquiring RT-Mart (大潤發).
Costco Taiwan trails behind its South Korean counterparts with only 48% cage-free egg sales. C!ty'super, operated by Far Eastern Group (遠東集團), quietly removed its 2025 cage-free commitment from its website despite achieving 52.94% compliance. ◼
