TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Taiwan faced a drop in temperature due to a northeast monsoon, leaving the island feeling chilly on Wednesday (Nov. 19). The weather fan page "Weather Messenger" (氣象報馬仔) reported that the high-pressure system has reached its closest point to Taiwan, marking tonight and early tomorrow as the coldest period.

"Weather Messenger" analyzed that temperatures in northern Taiwan will drop to 13-16 degrees Celsius. Increased moisture will bring cloudy and rainy weather to the north of Taiwan starting Thursday evening (Nov. 20). Strong northeast winds and intermittent rainfall will lower the perceived temperature by 2-3 degrees, making the damp cold more noticeable.

The northeast monsoon is expected to intensify from Thursday evening through Friday (Nov. 21). Moisture levels will increase significantly on the windward side, transforming Taoyuan and areas north, including New Taipei, Keelung, Yilan, Hualien, and Taitung, into cloudy and rainy regions, further intensifying the wet and cold conditions.

Former Central Weather Bureau Director Cheng Ming-dean (鄭明典) took to Facebook to share satellite images. He pointed out that the "X" symbol over Taiwan is actually mountain peaks protruding through cloud tops, urging the public to be mindful of radiative cooling at night.

Cheng explained that as the high-pressure system moves out to sea, gaps in the stratocumulus clouds allow for radiative cooling over land at night. Cold air flows along the terrain's lower areas, causing temperatures to drop in some regions, with mountain peaks experiencing radiative cooling above the cloud layer.
