TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Taiwanese pitcher Wang Yen-cheng (王彥程) signed with Korea's Hanwha Eagles Thursday (Nov. 13), becoming the second Taiwanese player in the Korea Baseball Organization (KBO) since 2018. The Eagles used the KBO's Asian quota system for Baseball Federation of Asia (BFA) and Australian Baseball League (ABL) players to secure Wang. The left-handed pitcher joins Korea's professional baseball league after competing in Japan's farm system.
Korean media reports Wang measures 180 centimeters (5'11") and weighs 82 kilograms (181 pounds) at age 24. The pitcher throws fastballs up to 154 kilometers per hour (96 mph) with a slider as his signature pitch. Wang posted a 10-5 record with 3.62 ERA and 84 strikeouts across 22 games in Japan's Nippon Professional Baseball (NPB) farm system this season.
Hanwha Eagles scouts evaluated Wang in Japan since last year before extending their contract offer. Eagles management expresses confidence that Wang will become a key roster addition and pivotal Asian foreign player. The Korean team highly rated Wang's potential after extensive international scouting efforts. ◼
