TAIPEI (TVBS News) — U.S. President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping (習近平) held a significant meeting Tuesday (Oct. 28) at Gimhae International Airport in Busan, South Korea. The summit lasted 1 hour and 40 minutes, extending beyond the planned schedule. Trump announced the U.S. will lower tariffs on China and confirmed Taiwan was not discussed.
Trump announced China will focus on fentanyl control, prompting his decision to lower tariffs from 57% to 47% effective immediately. Both leaders agreed to sign a trade agreement soon, including China's purchase of U.S. soybeans, with annual reviews planned. Trump plans to visit China in April 2026, while Xi will visit the U.S. at an unspecified time.
Each delegation included seven officials during the summit meeting. Trump's team featured Secretary of State Marco Rubio, Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick, and Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent. Xi's delegation included Vice Premier He Lifeng (何立峰), a senior Chinese government official, Foreign Minister Wang Yi (王毅), and Commerce Minister Wang Wentao (王文濤).
The meeting started at 11 a.m. Korean time (10 a.m. Taiwan time). Trump departed immediately for the U.S. afterward, while Xi remains for the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit. ◼
