TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Taipei officials plan to communicate with NVIDIA on Thursday (Oct. 23) after Shin Kong Life Insurance (新光人壽) agreed to relinquish land rights for the chip giant's Taiwan headquarters. The breakthrough involves T17 and T18 plots in Beitou Shilin Technology Park (北士科), a major technology development zone. Chen Chun-an (陳俊安), director of Taipei's Department of Economic Development, confirmed the development.
NVIDIA also plans internal discussions that day ahead of the set Oct. 24 deadline for responses from Taipei City and Taiwan's Ministry of Economic Affairs, the island's central economic planning agency, Chen reported. The American technology company seeks consolidated land assessments from all county and central government authorities across Taiwan to finalize its headquarters decision.
Taipei City will provide progress updates on the T17 and T18 plots following NVIDIA's internal deliberations. Chen confirmed that the Department of Land Administration (地政局) and Department of Legal Affairs (法務局), key city government agencies, will initiate consensual contract termination procedures with the insurance company. The city must still negotiate specific separation costs with Shin Kong Life during the upcoming formal discussions between both parties.
Shin Kong Life published statements in major Taiwan newspapers, United Daily News (聯合報), China Times (中國時報), and Liberty Times (自由時報), Taiwan's leading daily publications, denying compensation demands from Taipei City Government. The insurance company emphasized it never sought payment for potential future losses or engaged in profiteering activities related to the land deal. Shin Kong Life's board altered its investment strategy, choosing consensual contract termination to resolve the prolonged deadlock and support NVIDIA's Taiwan presence.
