TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Meteorologist Lin De-en (林得恩) warned on Thursday (Oct. 23) of significant rainfall likely to impact northern and eastern Taiwan during the Retrocession Day (光復節) holiday. Lin stated that on Friday (Oct. 24), the northeast monsoon will bring unstable weather, leading to heavy rain in northern and eastern regions.
The Central Weather Administration (CWA, 中央氣象署) issued a heavy rain alert for six counties and cities, including Yilan County, New Taipei City, the mountainous areas of Taipei City, Keelung, Taoyuan, and Hualien. Lin emphasized that the northeast monsoon will continue to affect the regions from Thursday to Friday, causing showers and potential heavy rain along the north coast of Keelung, Yilan, and in mountainous areas north of Hsinchu.
The northeast monsoon will weaken on Saturday (Oct. 25), leading to decreased environmental moisture and slight warming in central Taiwan. However, heavy rain may still occur along the windward side, including the north coast of Keelung, Yilan, and mountainous areas in the north and Hualien. The northeast monsoon will strengthen again on Sunday (Oct. 26), reducing moisture and cooling temperatures, particularly in northern Taiwan and Yilan.
Lin advised caution due to potential landslides, rockfalls, and flash floods in mountainous areas. The CWA's forecasts also suggest that while the intensity of rain will lessen, the potential for localized heavy showers remains a concern over the weekend.
