TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Heavy rains drenched northern Taiwan Tuesday (Oct. 21) as tropical storm Fengshen's outer circulation interacted with the northeast monsoon to create severe weather conditions. WeatherRisk (天氣風險), a Taiwanese weather forecasting company, reported the unusual phenomenon brought increased moisture and significant rainfall to windward areas. Taipei, Keelung's north coast, and Yilan experienced torrential downpours from the combined weather systems.
Taipei's Shilin District recorded the highest accumulated rainfall at 769.5 millimeters from Sunday (Oct. 19) midnight to Tuesday morning at 7:30 a.m. Taipei's Nangang followed with 723.0 millimeters, while New Taipei's Shiding and Pingxi Districts measured 620.5 and 618.0 millimeters respectively. Yilan's Dong'ao Ridge and Toucheng experienced substantial totals of 482.0 and 431.0 millimeters.
The northeast monsoon brought cooler air across Taiwan, with Miaoli's Tongluo Township recording the island's lowest temperature at 19.8 degrees Celsius (67.6°F) Tuesday morning. Taoyuan's Yangmei District and Hsinchu's Xinfeng Township experienced temperatures of 20.3 and 20.5 degrees Celsius (68.5°F and 68.9°F) respectively. Taipei's Daan Forest Park measured 21.3 degrees Celsius (70.3°F), while the main Taipei weather station recorded 22.1 degrees Celsius (71.8°F).
Tropical storm Fengshen's lingering impact and the strong northeast monsoon continue bringing moisture as the system moves away, prompting forecasts of ongoing rainfall in northern and northeastern regions. Daytime temperatures from northern Miaoli to Yilan remain between 22 and 24 degrees Celsius (72 to 75°F), while central Taiwan and Hualien areas range from 26 to 28 degrees Celsius (79 to 82°F). Southern regions and Taitung reach 30 to 32 degrees Celsius (86 to 90°F). ◼
