TAIPEI (TVBS News) — The International Monetary Fund dramatically upgraded Taiwan's 2025 economic growth forecast to 3.7% Tuesday (Oct. 14), marking a substantial upward revision from April's 2.9% projection. The latest World Economic Outlook report reflects growing optimism about Taiwan's economic trajectory amid global uncertainties. The upgrade represents one of the most significant positive adjustments for Taiwan in recent IMF assessments.

Economic projections for 2026 show more moderate expectations, with the IMF reducing Taiwan's GDP growth forecast from 2.5% to 2.1%. Consumer price inflation will ease to 1.7% this year from the spring projection of 1.8%, declining further to 1.6% in 2026. Taiwan's unemployment rate demonstrates remarkable stability, maintaining 3.4% through both 2025 and 2026 according to IMF calculations.

Global economic optimism stems from successful U.S. trade negotiations with major economies that prevented widespread tariff implementations, according to IMF analysis. World GDP growth projections climbed to 3.2% for 2025, up from July's 3.0% and April's more pessimistic 2.8%. The fund warned that renewed U.S.-China trade tensions could significantly dampen international economic momentum and undermine current positive forecasts.

Major economies received mixed but generally positive forecast revisions in the latest IMF assessment. The United States gained upgraded projections to 2.0% growth in 2025 and 2.1% in 2026. The Eurozone improved from 1.0% to 1.2% driven by German fiscal stimulus and Spanish economic strength. Japan's outlook brightened to 1.1% for 2025 before moderating to 0.6% the following year. China maintained its 4.8% forecast for 2025, declining to 4.2% in 2026. ◼
