TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Typhoon Ragasa (樺加沙) moved northwestward Tuesday (Sept. 23), threatening Hong Kong and Macau with potential landfall along Guangdong's western coast. Taiwan plans to lift its typhoon warning Tuesday while southeastern winds continue bringing heavy rain to Hualien, Taitung, and the Hengchun Peninsula (恆春半島).
Heavy rainfall will persist across Yilan, Greater Taipei, Taoyuan, and northern mountain areas through continued moisture accumulation. Southern Taiwan may experience scattered heavy rain while mountainous regions face potential torrential downpours. Weather impacts will diminish from Hsinchu southward through central Taiwan.
Southeastern winds will continue bringing heavy rain to Hualien, Taitung, and the Hengchun Peninsula through Wednesday (Sept. 24), likely easing Thursday (Sept. 25). Wind direction shifts will concentrate strong gusts at Taiwan's northern and southern tips. Northern coastal areas from Miaoli to the Taipei Basin will experience strong gusts reaching 8-10 on the Beaufort scale (62-89 kmh).
Southern areas from Hualien to Taitung, the Hengchun Peninsula, Green Island (綠島), and Orchid Island (蘭嶼) will experience continued strong gusts. Residents in southern coastal areas should heed warnings of localized strong gusts reaching 7-9 on the Beaufort scale (50-88 kmh) from afternoon through Tuesday evening. ◼
