TAOYUAN (TVBS News) — Taiwan's primary international gateway, Taoyuan International Airport Corporation (桃園機場公司), announced comprehensive traffic and pedestrian control measures scheduled for Thursday (July 17) at 1:30 p.m. as part of a mandatory town resilience air defense drill designed to test emergency protocols. Airport officials have issued advisories urging all travelers with flights during this period to arrive significantly earlier than usual to minimize potential disruptions to their travel plans. While regular flight operations will continue uninterrupted throughout the exercise, the drill will temporarily suspend ground transportation services including shuttle buses, taxi operations, and rental car services, with additional closures affecting the popular observation decks at Terminal 2.

Airport authorities have specifically cautioned departing passengers to plan their arrivals prior to the activation of the drill's emergency alarm system. This timing is crucial to avoid potential check-in complications resulting from the temporary traffic restrictions. The corporation has promoted alternative check-in methods, encouraging travelers to utilize mobile applications, online platforms, or convenient city check-in services where available. Officials have also emphasized the importance of maintaining communication with individual airlines regarding possible schedule adjustments. A primary objective of the exercise involves testing passenger compliance with security protocols, including proper response to airport police directives and the orderly parking of vehicles along designated roadside areas or in parking facilities during the simulated evacuation.

Tourism officials anticipate some temporary inconveniences for both international visitors and local travelers during the exercise period and recommend adjusting itineraries to accommodate these planned disruptions. The comprehensive preparedness initiative reflects Taiwan's ongoing commitment to maintaining robust emergency response capabilities at critical infrastructure sites amid regional security concerns. Security analysts note that such regular drills at major transportation hubs serve a dual purpose: enhancing operational readiness for natural disasters while simultaneously strengthening civil defense protocols that could prove vital during other emergency scenarios. ◼
