TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Economic Minister J.W. Kuo (郭智輝) visited the Taiwan Power Company (Taipower, 台電) union leader on Wednesday (July 9) to convey President Lai Ching-te's (賴清德) gratitude for the workers' dedication to power restoration efforts. The visit came in the wake of Typhoon Danas, which severely impacted Taiwan's southern and central regions.
Union leader Wu Yu-pin (吳有彬) highlighted Taipower's financial strain, attributing losses to the company's role in stabilizing prices. He urged public support for an NT$100 billion government subsidy to alleviate the burden. Wu noted that frequent typhoons in Taiwan often lead to collapsed poles, broken towers, and widespread blackouts, causing significant economic and societal damage.
Minister Kuo relayed President Lai's appreciation for the tireless efforts of Taipower employees working around the clock to restore power after Typhoon Danas. He reiterated that Taipower, as a state-owned enterprise, focuses on stabilizing prices rather than profit, leading to accumulated losses from unreflected costs. Wu urged the public to fully support the proposed NT$100 billion subsidy to stabilize the company's finances and ensure a reliable power supply.
