TAIPEI (TVBS News) — The Central Weather Administration (CWA, 氣象署) issued a high-temperature alert on Friday (June 27) for Kaohsiung, Pingtung, and Hualien, warning residents to brace for temperatures exceeding 36 degrees Celsius. Meteorologist Wu Der-rong (吳德榮) cautioned against severe afternoon thunderstorms and noted a brewing tropical disturbance east of the Philippines could form into a light typhoon next week.
The administration indicated that Tainan City, Kaohsiung City, Pingtung County, and Hualien County are under an orange alert, with a likelihood of consecutive days reaching 36°C. Wu pointed out that the latest European model shows the tropical disturbance may develop and move northeast, reducing its chance of nearing Taiwan.
Wu stated that there is a 40% chance of a light typhoon forming east of the Philippines by Wednesday. However, the probability decreases afterward, suggesting a significantly reduced risk of it approaching Taiwan. He advised patience, as the U.S. ensemble model shows divergent paths and international models require adjustments.
Wu also highlighted that a cold-core low-pressure system passing overhead today will bring hot weather and intense afternoon convection, necessitating caution against lightning, strong winds, and severe weather. Temperatures will range from 23 to 36°C in the north, 21 to 35°C in the central region, and 22 to 36 °C in the south and east.
