TAIPEI (TVBS News) — The FOOD TAIPEI MEGA SHOWS (台北國際食品展覽會) opened on Wednesday (June 25) with Taiwan's agriculture minister highlighting a significant boost in rice exports to Japan. At the Taiwan Pavilion's inauguration ceremony, the minister announced that Taiwan expects to export 12,000 tons of rice to Japan this year. This development comes amid a rice shortage in Japan, which has already received 8,700 kilograms from Taiwan.
Agriculture Minister Chen Junne-jih (陳駿季) emphasized that Taiwan's rice exports to Japan will become a long-term commitment rather than a temporary measure. He noted recent efforts to strengthen ties with Japanese distribution channels and witnessed the signing of two agreements symbolizing a new phase in Taiwan-Japan agricultural trade.
Japan's Central Corporation inked a letter of intent with Rich House Top Rice Taiwan (米屋智農股份有限公司) to supply rice to major Japanese retail channels. Additionally, Japan's Nopat Corporation signed a memorandum of understanding with the Taiwan Premium Agricultural Products Development Institute (財團法人台灣優良農產品發展協會) to introduce premium Taiwanese agricultural products into Japan's e-commerce platforms.
These agreements mark a significant milestone in Taiwan's agricultural exports, promising a strengthened presence in the Japanese market. As Taiwan continues to solidify its trade relationships, the farm sector anticipates further growth and collaboration opportunities with Japan.
