TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Taiwan's premier academic institution has ascended to elite global status in a ranking system that measures universities' real-world impact rather than traditional academic metrics. National Taiwan University (NTU, 台灣大學), the island's oldest and most prestigious university, has climbed to 14th place worldwide in the Times Higher Education (THE) 2025 University Impact Rankings, a significant achievement for an Asian institution in the international higher education landscape. NTU President Chen Wen-chang (陳文章) highlighted the recognition during a press conference on Wednesday (Jun 18), attributing the remarkable performance to the university's sustained commitment to excellence across its teaching programs, research initiatives, and social sustainability projects — areas specifically evaluated in this ranking system, which assesses how universities advance the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), a collection of 17 interlinked global objectives designed to address pressing environmental, political, and economic challenges.

The latest rankings showcase Taiwan's broader academic strength, with NTU leading a contingent of four Taiwanese universities placing in the global top 100—a disproportionately strong showing for an island of 23 million people. While NTU claimed the 14th position overall, three other national universities also earned distinguished placements: National Cheng Kung University (NCKU, 成功大學), a comprehensive research university in southern Taiwan known for its engineering programs, secured 31st place; National Yang Ming Chiao Tung University (NYCU, 陽明交通大學), a recently merged institution combining medical and technological expertise, ranked 41st; and National Yunlin University of Science and Technology (Yuntech, 雲林科技大學), a specialized technical institution, placed 77th. NTU's performance was particularly impressive in specific sustainability categories, with the university earning second place globally in the "Good Health and Well-being" indicator, ninth in "Life Below Water" for marine conservation efforts, and twelfth in "Peace, Justice, and Strong Institutions," reflecting its contributions to social equity and governance.

Behind NTU's impressive rankings lie concrete initiatives that demonstrate the university's commitment to sustainable development beyond Taiwan's borders. The university's College of Medicine (台大醫學院), one of Asia's most respected medical schools founded in 1897 during the Japanese colonial period, has established a significant regional presence through its physician training programs throughout Southeast Asia while simultaneously addressing healthcare disparities within Taiwan by deploying medical teams to underserved rural and mountain communities. NTU's high ranking in marine conservation reflects the substantial work of its oceanographic research units, which conduct extensive monitoring of water resources and lead biodiversity preservation efforts in the waters surrounding Taiwan. The university has also translated its research prowess into economic impact, cultivating robust partnerships with industry that generated NT$2.38 billion (approximately US$80.5 million) in 2024 through various collaboration mechanisms, while maintaining an intellectual property portfolio of more than 2,490 active patents across diverse technological fields. ◼
