TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Chiayi's Mayor Huang Min-hui (黃敏惠) embarked Monday (June 2) on a strategic five-day mission to Kuala Lumpur (吉隆坡), leading a high-level delegation to strengthen tourism partnerships with Malaysia. The visit represents Taiwan's growing diplomatic outreach through cultural and economic exchanges in Southeast Asia.

The delegation will engage with the Malaysian Chinese Tourism Association and orchestrate a major promotional event Wednesday (June 4). These meetings aim to deepen bilateral tourism cooperation and expand cultural exchange programs between Taiwan and Malaysia. City officials disclosed that the itinerary encompasses visits to Malaysia's iconic cultural landmarks and urban renewal projects, including the historic Petaling Street district. These site visits will provide valuable insights into innovative urban design and successful operational frameworks for tourism development.

Mayor Huang highlighted Chiayi's aggressive international tourism strategy, citing remarkable results from previous overseas promotion efforts. The city experienced a 2.8-fold surge in South Korean visitors following a successful promotional campaign in Seoul during 2024. Chiayi recorded impressive tourism growth with a 50% increase in foreign visitor stays during 2024 compared to 2023. Malaysian tourists contributed significantly to this success, with visitor numbers jumping 38% year-over-year, demonstrating strong bilateral tourism potential.

Huang explained that the timing strategically aligns with Malaysia's preparation for 'Visit Malaysia Year 2026,' a national tourism promotion campaign. The mayor expressed optimism that this coordination will unlock fresh opportunities for enhanced bilateral tourism and deeper cultural exchange initiatives. Tourism and News Director Chang Wan-fen (張婉芬) announced the formation of the "Chiayi Team," comprising representatives from local tourism, hotel, and business district associations. This unified delegation will present Chiayi's comprehensive tourism offerings during the pivotal June 4 promotional event.

The comprehensive initiative underscores Chiayi's dedicated commitment to expanding international tourism networks and strengthening cultural diplomatic ties. The multi-sector approach demonstrates Taiwan's strategic focus on building sustainable tourism partnerships across Southeast Asia ◼
