TAIPEI (TVBS News) — With anxious glances and hushed conversations, Taiwan's auto parts executives huddled in small groups at Taipei's sprawling exhibition center this week for the Taipei AMPA & Autotronics (台北國際汽機車零配件展&台北國際車用電子展), strategizing how to survive what many view as an existential threat. The specter of new American tariffs looms over one of the island's most crucial industries, potentially reshaping competitive dynamics with regional manufacturing rivals.

The stakes are high for Taiwan's automotive components sector, which generated NT$208.5 billion (US$6.41 billion) in exports last year. Analysts predict the proposed 25 percent American tariffs could trigger cascading effects throughout Taiwan's economy, jeopardizing livelihoods across an industry that employs thousands of workers across hundreds of specialized manufacturing firms.

"Automotive parts and vehicle electronics have long been cornerstone export sectors for Taiwan's economy," said TAITRA Chairman Huang Chih-fang (黃志芳), who leads Taiwan's primary trade promotion organization. "While tariffs will undoubtedly impact our manufacturers, the 25 percent duty on automobiles and auto parts applies universally, not exclusively to Taiwan."

This universal application offers little comfort to local manufacturers already grappling with shrinking profit margins in an industry known for its razor-thin economics. Throughout the exhibition hall's labyrinth of displays featuring precision-engineered components, company representatives reported mounting frustration as they struggle to develop viable contingency plans, discovering that alternative manufacturing locations face equally problematic trade barriers.

In his booth showcasing advanced vehicle camera equipment, JET Opto Chairman Jerry Lin (林傳凱) gestured anxiously while highlighting the uncertainty confronting his mid-sized enterprise. "Most of our production for the U.S. is now in Taiwan. But there's still uncertainty, because Taiwan exports into the U.S.," Lin said. "Right now, it's supposed to be 25% for automotive parts, but they said that could change."

The industry's dilemma extends beyond simply relocating production facilities to circumvent the new trade landscape. "Even if we move to Mexico, the US is threatening to increase Mexico's tariffs as well," Lin explained, leaning forward intently. "All the countries are being hit, so even for South Korea, for Japan, for Vietnam, for Thailand, everybody has a tariff."

What particularly worries Taiwanese manufacturers is not merely the tariffs themselves but the potential for competitive disadvantage in the global marketplace. "My biggest concern is we don't lose to south Korea and Japan. If their tariffs are lower than Taiwan's, then we will have a very, very big problem," Lin added, his voice dropping to emphasize the gravity of this scenario.

Against this backdrop of mounting anxiety, industry leaders are urgently calling for immediate government intervention from Taiwan's highest levels to ensure the island doesn't face higher tariff rates than its regional manufacturing competitors. Without a coordinated national strategy addressing both diplomatic and economic dimensions, experts warn that Taiwan's crucial export sectors risk permanent displacement in the global automotive supply chain.

Taiwan's Ministry of Economic Affairs has announced it will convene emergency consultations with industry representatives next week to formulate a comprehensive response to the evolving tariff situation. Officials indicated they are actively exploring diplomatic channels through Taiwan's unofficial representatives in Washington to seek tariff parity with other Asian manufacturing hubs. ★
