TAIPEI (TVBS News) — A staggering 10,000 tons of food waste generated daily by schools across Taiwan's major urban centers has prompted legislators to demand greater student involvement in meal planning decisions. Three legislators from the ruling Democratic Progressive Party (DPP, 民進黨), held a press conference Thursday (April 10) to advocate for systematic reforms to the island's school lunch programs, arguing that regular assessment of student food preferences could significantly reduce waste and improve nutrition outcomes.

Legislator Lin Yueh-chin (林月琴) highlighted a significant policy-practice gap in Taiwan's educational system, noting that despite a 2016 Ministry of Education (MOE, 教育部) directive requiring student representation in meal planning committees, actual implementation remains inconsistent nationwide. Student input is frequently treated as a mere formality, with little meaningful response or action taken, Lin asserted. The legislator' concerns were reinforced by testimony from Yu Pei-chun (余珮君), a student at Taipei Municipal Fuxing Senior High School (台北市復興高中), who described monotonous menu options and quality compromised by extended delivery times and inadequate temperature maintenance.

The press conference featured additional student testimony from Hsiao Yu-ju (蕭鈺儒), who attends Chien Kuo Junior High School (建國國中) and raised health concerns about current menu offerings, describing them as excessively sweet and oil-heavy. In response to these student grievances, Legislator Lin outlined a three-pronged reform approach: mandatory student participation in meal planning committees, simplified nutritional information accessible to students, and structured feedback mechanisms. Her colleague, Legislator Chen Pei-yu, framed the issue as a children's rights matter, calling for multi-level student representation and proposing that at least one-quarter of nutrition committee seats be allocated to students.

The third legislator at the press conference, Legislator Wu Pei-yi (吳沛憶), pointed to existing precedent within Taiwan's educational system where student voice has already been successfully integrated into policy decisions. Wu specifically referenced the widespread practice of including student representatives on uniform policy committees, suggesting this model could be effectively adapted for meal planning. "Students deserve a meaningful role in both discussions and final decisions about the food they consume daily," Wu emphasized, reinforcing the delegation's unified position on expanding youth participation in school nutrition governance.
