TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Taiwan's Ministry of Education (MOE, 教育部) has launched an innovative distance learning program that integrates professional teaching with AI tools, benefiting 16 schools and 339 students in 2024. In a Tuesday (March 4) press release, the MOE introduced the "English Distance Learning Program" (英語課程遠距直播共學計畫), featuring engaging methods to enhance students' language skills.
Chen Yu-hsuan (陳俞琁), one of the program's teachers, uses generative AI tools to transform long texts into interactive videos, creating a dynamic learning experience. Her classes include cultural insights from various countries, allowing students to learn English from a cross-cultural perspective. During in-person school visits, she incorporates English board games to provide more opportunities for students to practice speaking in a relaxed and enjoyable environment.
Another educator, Chan Chiao-ching (詹椒青), adopts group live-streamed learning, emphasizing physical interaction among students. Despite smaller class sizes, students actively participate. Chan boosts students' spelling and reading skills and builds their confidence through collaborative games and praise during Christmas activities.
The K-12 Education Administration (國民及學前教育署) noted the program's success over the past five years, with increased student engagement in English classes and achievements in related competitions. Officials plan to continue promoting this initiative to bridge the gap between teachers and students through online platforms and cameras.
