TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Premier Cho Jung-tai (卓榮泰) announced on Thursday (Feb. 27) that Taiwan's "Organic Agriculture Promotion Act (有機農業促進法)," enacted in May 2019, has achieved significant milestones as part of the nation's net-zero transformation strategy. Cho emphasized that organic agriculture is to ensure sustainable farming practices across the country.
The Executive Yuan (行政院) spokesperson Michelle Lee (李慧芝) suggested that, during the cabinet meeting, Cho demanded the Ministry of Agriculture (MOA, 農業部) to continue its promotion of organic agriculture. Also, the promotions require various ministries, including the Ministry of Economic Affairs (MOEA, 經濟部), which integrates corporate ESG practices with organic farming, according to Cho's statement.
Meanwhile, Lee said that Cho directed the Ministry of National Defense (MND, 國防部) and Ministry of Education (MOEA, 經濟部) to expand the use of organic ingredients in military and school catering services. Moreover, the MOA added that by the end of 2024, the certified organic area had reached 20,304 hectares, with an additional 6,708 hectares registered for environmentally friendly farming, which is a total 27,012 hectares, a 2-3 times increase, compared to 2018.
To further extend organic production capacity, the MOA emphasized that the ministry has guided local governments in establishing organic agriculture promotion zones. As of February, four counties and cities have announced the establishment of eight such zones.
