TAIPEI (TVBS News) — In response to U.S. President Donald Trump's threat of tariffs on Taiwanese semiconductors, Economic Minister J.W. Kuo (郭智輝) stated on Wednesday (Feb. 26) that the government will not accept unfair tariffs but remains open to discussions on other issues.
Kuo emphasized the importance of understanding the U.S.'s intentions as Trump seeks fair competition within the industry. He revealed that negotiations remain ongoing, though he withheld specific details.
The minister characterized the tariffs as a negotiation tactic and stressed the need to clarify Taiwan's role in the global supply chain. He noted that Taiwan should make it straightforward to its trade partners that it contributes to global industrial development rather than merely profiting from them.
The Ministry of Economic Affairs (MOEA, 經濟部) has engaged with over 100 manufacturers to gather insights on their needs, providing valuable information to the negotiation team. Deputy Economic Minister Cynthia Kiang (江文若) recently traveled to the U.S. to get more information on its current stance, which Kuo believes will enhance the precision of future negotiations.
