TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Team Taiwan (中華隊) defeated Spain 6-3 in a do-or-die matchup on Tuesday (Feb. 25), securing a spot in the World Baseball Classic (世界棒球經典賽). The victory came after overcoming numerous challenges, including pitching restrictions, illnesses, and injuries, demonstrating the team's resilience and determination.
Despite a rocky start in the qualifiers, with a 5-12 loss to Spain and a 0-6 defeat against Nicaragua, Team Taiwan bounced back with a decisive 9-1 win over South Africa. Facing pressure from fans and media, players opted out of joint interviews to focus on the game. Chinese Professional Baseball League (CPBL, 中華職棒) Commissioner Tsai Chi-chang (蔡其昌) noted that the coaching staff spent considerable time negotiating pitching limits with the home teams to protect the players.
The team also faced a cold virus outbreak, with some players competing despite high fevers. Captain Chen Chieh-hsien (陳傑憲) played through wrist discomfort and urged fans to offer more support, emphasizing the importance of companionship in sports. He stressed that sports competitions have wins and losses, but the most important thing is companionship and support.
After the tournament, players will return to their home teams to prepare for the new season. Zhuang Chen Zhong-ao (莊陳仲敖) will attend Oakland Athletics spring training, while young talents like Sun Yi-lei (孫易磊) and Lin Wei-en (林維恩) are poised to become regulars on the national team.
