TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Taiwanese students faced a significant challenge in Math A, as revealed by the GSAT results released on Tuesday (Feb. 25). The College Entrance Examination Center (大學入學考試中心) reported that scores for top, high, average, and low performers all dropped by one level compared to the previous year.
This year's top scores for each subject stood at 13 levels for Chinese, English, social studies, and natural sciences, while Math A and Math B scored 11 and 12, respectively. Math A's decline marked a significant shift, with fewer students achieving the highest score of 15 levels. English had the highest number of perfect scores at 3,874, while Math A had the fewest at 1,226.
The number of students scoring zero in Math B reached 82, the highest among all subjects, followed by Math A with 39. The center's Deputy Director Huang Cui-juan (黃璀娟) attributed the lower Math A scores to the non-multiple-choice questions requiring cross-unit integration of concepts, which resulted in lower scoring rates.
Huang also noted a decrease in perfect scores for social studies compared to last year, though the overall distribution remained relatively stable. The distribution of Chinese scores shifted leftward, indicating potentially more challenging questions. The center plans to analyze the scoring and discrimination rates to refine future test designs.
