TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Taichung Mayor Lu Shiow-yen (盧秀燕) on Thursday (Feb. 21) announced plans to visit Japan later this month, marking her first trip there since taking office in 2018. During an interview with Nikkei (日本經濟新聞), she said she intends to meet with local government and business representatives in Tokyo and Nagoya.
Nikkei reported that Lu, viewed as a strong contender for the Kuomintang (KMT, 國民黨) presidential nomination, may use this visit to expand her network in Japan. Lu did not provide a direct answer when asked about the possibility of running in the 2028 presidential election, expressing gratitude for the expectations placed upon her as they reflect concern for Taiwan's future.
Lu emphasized her current focus on fulfilling her mayoral duties until her term ends in 2026, stating she has not considered other roles. Regarding the upcoming KMT chairmanship election later this year, she mentioned she is still contemplating her participation.
According to Nikkei, Lu advocates for global diplomacy and asserts that Taiwan's sovereignty is non-negotiable. She emphasizes that Taiwan should not become subservient to any nation and highlights her stance of maintaining distance from the U.S. and China.
