TAICHUNG (TVBS News)—Taichung Mayor Lu Shiow-yen (盧秀燕) honored 10 heroes on Tuesday (Feb. 18) for their brave response to the department store gas explosion. She expressed her gratitude with a bow and awarded them NT$80,000 in total.
A gas explosion at the Shin Kong Mitsukoshi Zhonggang Store (新光三越中港店) last Thursday resulted in four deaths and 37 injuries. In the chaos of the incident, 11 individuals, including a nurse couple from Changhua Christian Hospital (彰化基督教醫院), a civil engineer, and volunteers, rushed to the scene to help.
Their courageous actions, such as performing CPR on the injured, deeply moved the nation. Mayor Lu praised the heroes for their bravery and selflessness, bowing three times to show her appreciation.
Lu emphasized that these heroes represent Taiwan's most beautiful scenery, expressing the gratitude of Taichung's 2.68 million residents for their contributions. The city government's recognition underscores the community's appreciation for those who risked their own safety to help others during the crisis.
