TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Taipei Metro (台北捷運) announced Monday (Feb. 17) that it will adjust its frequent rider discounts starting March 1, potentially reducing cash rebates by NT$2 per ride.
The decision comes as the company faces financial pressures from rising electricity costs and minimum wage adjustments, which may lead to its first loss in 2025.
Taipei Metro explained that the board and the city government approved the plan to reduce frequent rider discounts in 2024 to mitigate the financial burden without increasing fares. Under the new scheme, riders who take the metro 11 to 20 times a month will receive a 5% cashback; 21 to 40 times, 10%; and over 41 times, 15%.
However, discounted fare types, including the Senior Card (敬老卡), Charity Card (愛心卡), and Children Card (兒童卡), will remain unaffected.
Additionally, Taipei Metro introduced the Ministry of Transportation and Communications (MOTC, 交通部) TPASS 2.0 frequent rider rebate program. Travelers can enjoy an extra 2% rebate by registering their electronic tickets and riding the metro at least 11 times a month.
