TAIPEI (TVBS News) — The Industrial Technology Research Institute (ITRI, 工研院) announced a groundbreaking 3D intelligent welding AI robot on Wednesday (Feb. 12), promising to revolutionize the industry. The robot boasts a 99% success rate and reduces welding time from six hours to just 30 minutes.
According to ITRL's press release, the AI robot can handle materials ranging from thin plates under 2 cm to thick plates up to 8 cm, improving efficiency by 12 times. Chen Po-jung (陳柏戎), head of the Smart Sensing & Systems Technology Center (智慧感測與系統科技中心), highlighted that existing collaborative welding robots only perform single-pass welding on thin plates under 2 cm and require manual path programming.
Chen explained that ITRI trained the AI decision models by collecting expert knowledge and experience from veteran welders, integrating 3D vision sensors to achieve automated welding. ITRI has already validated this technology at domestic steel plants.
ITRI envisions deploying this innovative AI robot across various industries, including automotive, aerospace, transportation, and construction.
