TAIPEI (TVBS News) — The American Institute in Taiwan's (AIT, 美國在台協會) Director Ingrid Larson confirmed on Friday (Feb. 7) that Laura Rosenberger's tenure as Chairwoman ended on Jan. 21. The institute's website and official Twitter account have updated Rosenberger's status to a former chair and removed her name and photo.
Laura Rosenberger, appointed during President Joe Biden's administration, succeeded James Moriarty as AIT chair in March 2023. During her tenure, she visited Taiwan at least six times, most recently in May 2024 for President Lai Ching-te's (賴清德) inauguration. Her final tweet as AIT chair in Dec. 2024 welcomed President Lai's transit through Hawaii.
With over a decade of service in the State Department and National Security Council, Rosenberger held multiple roles, including the council's Senior Director for China and Taiwan Affairs. She also served as chief of staff and senior adviser to Antony Blinken when he was Deputy Secretary of State and Deputy National Security Adviser.
After Rosenberger stepped down as Senior Director for China and Taiwan Affairs at the National Security Council in 2023, Sarah Beran, a senior diplomat of the Department of State, took over. Recently, Ivan Kanapathy, who oversaw Taiwan, China, and Mongolia affairs during former President Donald Trump's first term, returned as Senior Director for Asian affairs at the National Security Council.
