TAIPEI (TVBS News) — United Microelectronics Corp. (UMC, 聯華電子) has achieved a significant milestone by securing a spot on the World Economic Forum's Global Lighthouse Network for its Fab 12A in Tainan, southern Taiwan. Announced Tuesday (Jan. 14), this recognition marks the first time a semiconductor foundry has attained Lighthouse status, highlighting UMC's commitment to integrating Fourth Industrial Revolution (4IR) technologies.
The Global Lighthouse Network, co-founded in 2018 by the World Economic Forum and McKinsey & Co., acknowledges sites worldwide for their innovative use of 4IR technologies. With UMC's inclusion, the network now spans 189 sites across more than 30 countries and 35 sectors. UMC's Fab 12A, serving as the company's pilot fab for digital transformation since 2017, has successfully integrated over 48 4IR solutions, with nearly 95% developed or customized in-house.
UMC's digital transformation efforts have yielded impressive results. Fab 12A achieved a 57% reduction in design kit delivery time, increased product yields to 97%, and improved workforce efficiency by 47%. These advancements have significantly enhanced customer engagement, quality, and profitability. TS Wu, UMC's Vice President and Head of Digital Office, expressed pride in the achievement, stating, "We are honored to be recognized by the World Economic Forum as a frontrunner in adopting smart manufacturing solutions at scale to transform our business."
UMC specializes in producing specialty semiconductors, which pose complex manufacturing challenges. The 4IR technologies deployed at Fab 12A have expanded customer engagements and boosted the company's overall profitability. To accelerate time to market, UMC employed machine learning tools to cut design kit creation lead time for new fabrication processes by more than half. Additionally, they developed an AI-enabled platform to streamline data handling for photomask accuracy.
UMC's recognition as a Global Lighthouse highlights its leadership in smart manufacturing and its commitment to continuous innovation. As the semiconductor industry faces increasing demands, UMC's advancements in 4IR technologies position the company at the forefront of digital transformation, setting a benchmark for others to follow.
