TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Apple plans to offer free access to its Apple TV+ streaming service this weekend, marking a strategic shift as iPhone sales slow. The tech giant announced that from Jan. 3 to Jan. 5, users worldwide can watch Apple TV+ content free of charge by logging in with an Apple ID on any supported device.
Popular shows on Apple TV+ include the second seasons of the original series "Silo" (末日地堡), "Shrinking" (誠實診療室), and "Bad Sisters" (不良姊妹), as well as Golden Globe-nominated titles "Slow Horses" (外放特務組) and "Disclaimer" (免責聲明). The workplace thriller "Severance" (人生切割術) is also set to release its second season soon, adding to the platform's diverse offerings.
Since its 2019 launch, Apple TV+ has carved out a niche with original content, now available in over 100 countries and regions. In Taiwan, the subscription costs NT$250 per month, undercutting major rivals Netflix and Disney+. Despite its efforts, Apple TV+ holds an 8% market share in the U.S., according to JustWatch, trailing behind Amazon Prime Video's 22% and Netflix's 21%.
As Apple continues to focus on software and services amidst intensified smartphone competition, the company aims to boost its streaming service's visibility and subscriber base. This free weekend initiative may signal further strategic moves to enhance Apple TV+'s market position.
