TAIPEI (TVBS News) — The Straits Exchange Foundation (SEF, 海基會) chairman on Tuesday (Dec. 31) emphasized the government's clear policy of "Communication, dialogue, and peace." It urged China's Association for Relations Across the Taiwan Straits (ARATS, 海協會) to reciprocate goodwill.
SEF Chairman Wu Feng-shan (吳豊山) stated that Taiwan will never be the party disrupting peace in the Taiwan Strait, highlighting that cross-strait peace development is the most significant guarantee for the well-being of people on both sides.
Wu noted that the foundation, commissioned by the government to handle cross-strait exchange affairs, has processed between 200,000 and 300,000 cases in recent years. He criticized the other side for unilaterally halting dialogue since 2016, citing the "1992 Consensus" (九二共識) as the reason, which he called a misjudgment of Taiwan's social structure and public sentiment.
Despite efforts over the past two months to resume cross-strait dialogue, Wu admitted no progress has been made. He called for cooperation between the ARATS and the SEF to embrace a brighter future.
