TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Taichung's Civil Affairs Bureau (臺中市政府民政局) announced on Tuesday (Dec. 24) that the city's population has officially surpassed 2.86 million. The bureau lauded Taichung as a thriving and attractive city that draws residents from across Taiwan. Among the new residents, 16,800 people relocated from Changhua, followed by 5,311 from New Taipei and 4,839 from Nantou.
According to the bureau, Beitun District (北屯區) attracted the highest number of new residents, with 6,042 people moving in, followed by 2,444 in Nantun District (南屯區) and 1,811 in Taiping District (太平區). Notably, Taiping District's population has now reached 199,912. The bureau also highlighted growth in Taichung's coastal areas, which have historically had smaller populations. In November, Shalu District (沙鹿區) saw its population exceed 100,000 for the first time.
Taichung Mayor Lu Shiow-yen (盧秀燕) noted that the city's population growth has been remarkable. Given the significant influx of new residents, she proposed that future budgeting and infrastructure planning should align with the needs of a city structured for a population of 3 million.
