TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Family members held a private memorial service for renowned author Chiung Yao (瓊瑤) on Wednesday (Dec. 11), following her tragic passing on Dec. 4 at the age of 86. The ceremony featured a romantic setting with white flowers, butterflies, and candles, offering a serene tribute to the beloved writer.
Chiung Yao's suicide has sparked significant societal concern, however. The Taiwanese Society of Suicidology (台灣自殺防治學會) issued a statement last Thursday, urging the public to address the issue of elder suicide. The organization highlighted that the suicide rate among those over 65 is the highest among all age groups in Taiwan.
Taiwanese Society of Suicidology identified seven major risk factors for elder suicide: mental disorders, physical health conditions, social isolation, economic pressure, feelings of loss and worthlessness, substance abuse, and the stress of long-term care. They also noted six warning signs, including mood changes, loss of interest, sleep disturbances, discussions of death, giving away valuables, and sudden mood shifts.
To prevent such tragedies, experts recommended proactive care for elders, encouraging social participation, assisting in seeking professional help, and monitoring changes in their physical and mental health. These steps, they believe, can help mitigate the risk of elder suicide and foster a supportive environment for the elderly.
