TAOYUAN (TVBS News) — Taoyuan Mayor Cheng San-cheng (張善政) announced on Wednesday (Dec. 11) that the city government has completed pathway improvement projects for 56 schools, surpassing the initial target of 50. This initiative enhances school pathways to address Taoyuan's poor pedestrian safety reputation. The city government has collaborated with the Department of Education (教育局), the Department of Urban Development(都發局), and district offices to focus on improving school corridor pathways.
They plan to enhance pathways for over 100 schools by 2026, with current progress indicating that this goal is achievable. Cheng emphasized prioritizing student safety and improving pedestrian environments around stations, commercial areas, and hospitals to make Taoyuan pedestrian-friendly. Pedestrian safety has been a significant social concern recently, and the city government has been working on pedestrian-friendly infrastructure citywide.
By the end of November, they completed improvements on 157 pedestrian crossing lines, achieving more than 150% of their target. Taoyuan's population surpassed 2.33 million in October, having grown by 50,000 in less than two years, indicating its appeal as a long-term residence for young people. Cheng stated that various departments proactively planned these improvements based on their expertise, highlighting the importance of teamwork and innovation.
