TAIPEI (TVBS News) — The Taipei City Government's Department of Education (台北市教育局) responded on Tuesday (Dec. 10) to concerns about the abrupt closure of iLearn (愛學習), a children's English cram school in Taipei owned by Taiwanese singer Yeh Wei-ting's (葉瑋庭) foreign husband, Russ.
The school allegedly shut down due to financial difficulties, leaving parents worried about prepaid tuition fees. Parents alerted the department last Thursday about iLearn's sudden decision to cease operations, citing potential consumer rights violations such as unrefunded fees.
The department promptly dispatched officials to investigate and requested student rosters and other documents from the school. They also instructed the school to activate its performance guarantee and address parents' refund concerns.
The school informed the department of securing a new funding source, allowing operations to continue through the current semester last Friday. They have contacted the insurance company to initiate the performance guarantee for refunds.
Several parents who recently paid tuition expressed frustration, suspecting the school of deceit by accepting payments despite financial troubles. The department urged the school to maintain communication with the insurance company, and update the department on progress.
