TAIPEI (TVBS News) — The Taipei City Department of Health (北市衛生局) reported on Thursday (Dec. 5) that enterovirus (腸病毒) cases reached 2,246 during the week of Nov. 24-30, marking the highest single-week count in a decade. The department revealed seven severe cases of enterovirus infections nationwide this year, with one severe case in Taipei, primarily due to the Coxsackie A virus.

Health officials have identified 12 cases of enterovirus A71, all of which were mild. Recently, the department detected enterovirus D68 infections in adults over 40, with symptoms like fever, nasal congestion, and runny nose. Both adults and children face infection risks, particularly in childcare facilities and children's activity centers.

The department urged families to prevent sibling transmission by practicing regular handwashing and cleaning children's frequently touched items. Children under 5 are at high risk for severe symptoms, which can progress rapidly. The health department advised parents to seek immediate medical attention at one of Taipei's 14 designated hospitals if young children show signs of severe illness, such as drowsiness or confusion.

Enterovirus poses a significant threat, especially to young children. The department's recommendations aim to curb the spread and ensure prompt treatment. Families are encouraged to remain vigilant and adhere to preventive measures to protect their loved ones.
