TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Labor unions representing food delivery workers in Taiwan filed a petition with the Fair Trade Commission (FTC, 公平會) on Wednesday (Dec. 4) to demand a thorough review of Uber Eats' (優步外送) acquisition of Foodpanda (熊貓外送).
The unions argued that the merger would create an unprecedented market share, potentially reaching up to 90%, which could lead to monopolistic practices. The unions presented an appeal, urging the FTC to scrutinize the merger closely.
Chen Yu-an (陳昱安), chairman of the delivery industry union, expressed disappointment over the exclusion of union representatives from a meeting between the commission, industry leaders, and experts.
They called for the prevention of a monopoly, protection against data abuse, and swift legislation to safeguard the rights of delivery workers, merchants, and consumers. Over 200 delivery workers protested outside the commission's office, chanting slogans to voice their concerns.
